This page covers the most common ways to resolve a non-functioning laptop touchpad. If you cannot resolve the issue for your laptop's touchpad after trying the solutions on this page, the touchpad is probably not working due to a less common cause. In this case, we recommend taking the laptop to a computer repair shop for further analysis.
Operating system not responding
The first thing to check is whether the computer and the operating system is not responding as well. It could be that the computer is frozen, meaning it is not responding to any commands you give it. In this case, the touchpad would also not be working.
To check for this issue, try pressing the Windows key to see if the Start Menu opens.
Fn key combination
Some laptops have an Fn key + function key combo to enable and disable the touchpad. If your laptop has this feature, try pressing the button or keys to turn the touchpad on and off a few times, to see if that resolves the issue.
External device
Some USB input devices automatically disable the touchpad when connected. As a troubleshooting step, turn off the computer, disconnect all external devices, then start the computer again to ensure one of them has not turned off the touchpad. If this fixes your problem, you can reconnect the USB device to continue troubleshooting or changing settings discussed in the next sections.
Check touchpad settingsNote
We recommend that you connect a USB external mouse, or use the laptop's TrackPoint (if available) to perform the steps below. If you cannot get an external mouse to function, see our navigating Windows with the keyboard page.
As we mentioned in the previous section, it's important to have a look at your mouse/touchpad settings, as they may keep your touchpad from working or disable the touchpad entirely. To access the mouse settings, follow the steps below.
Windows users - Touchpad settings
Windows users - Mouse settings
If the Control Panel View by option is set to Small icons, click on the Mouse option in step 2 above.
If you do not see a touchpad tab in the Mouse Properties window, try the following steps.
If you do not see a non-USB HID-compliant mouse device on the Hardware tab, the touchpad may have been disabled in the BIOS (see the BIOS setup section below). If the touchpad has not been disabled in the BIOS, the Windows operating system may not be able to detect it due to it being defective and non-working (see the defective hardware section).

Checking Device Manager and updating driversNote
We recommend that you connect a USB external mouse, or use the laptop's TrackPoint (if available) to perform the steps below. If you cannot get an external mouse to function, see our navigating Windows with the keyboard page.
If the touchpad still isn't working, the Windows Device Manager can tell you detailed information about hardware issues and help you update drivers. For example, if a device has a yellow exclamation mark or red X next to it, this is indicative of hardware or software issues. To locate the touchpad in Device Manager, follow the steps below.
If you see two entries named HID-compliant mouse, right-click on each and select Properties. In the Properties window, on the General tab, check the Location value. If the Location is 'on I2C HID Device,' that is the touchpad device on your laptop.
Right-clicking the touchpad icon gives you the option to either enable or disable it, depending on the device's status. If disabled, re-enable and test the touchpad. If it is already enabled, change it to disabled, then re-enable it. Sometimes toggling this setting 'resets' and fixes the touchpad.
Note
If you do not see the touchpad device listed in the Device Manager, it may have been disabled in the BIOS (see the BIOS setup section below). If the touchpad has not been disabled in the BIOS, the Windows operating system may not be able to detect it due to it being defective (see the defective hardware section below).
Check CMOS (BIOS) setup
Make sure the touchpad has not been disabled in the CMOS (BIOS) setup. Once you have entered the BIOS or CMOS setup, check the hardware device settings and, if the touchpad is disabled, re-enable it and restart the laptop to test the touchpad.
Corrupt operating system files
Another possible cause for a malfunctioning touchpad is corrupt operating system files. How many eggs a day is healthy. While you would notice other issues as well due to corrupt system files, this could result in the touchpad not working.
Fixing this requires you to either activate a restore point at a date before the touchpad stopped working, or you may need to perform an operating system repair installation. The repair installation will require you to access a restore partition on the hard drive or use an operating system install disc.
Defective hardware
Finally, if the touchpad still is not working correctly or at all after trying the troubleshooting steps above, it may be defective. Contact the computer manufacturer for further suggestions or take the laptop to a computer repair shop. It could require replacement of the touchpad itself or another hardware component. If the touchpad cannot be fixed, you could connect and use an external mouse as a workaround.

Having some problems after upgrading for 7 to 8.
My computer is an HP ENVY 17-3270, and the issues I'm having are my keyboard acts funny and my touchpad does not work at all. I'll try to explain the keyboard problem as best as I can. For whatever reason, the keyboard sort of jitters back and forth between typing and not typing. If I would to just type a sentence, it will accept what I type for a second, and not accept for another second, then accept it again. Like if I would quickly type the sentence 'The cat is a cute cat', it would get 'The cat' and then skip 'is a' and then would accept 'cute cat', so all it says after I type all those words is 'The cat cute cat'. And it's not inconsistent, this happens every time I try to type. It accepts characters for about a second, then it goes back to not accepting my characters again, and then it goes back to working again. Although I'm typing from an external USB keyboard and it's working perfectly fine. Is this a driver issue, or did I mess up some sort of setting? And the second problem is a lot easier to explain: My touchpad does not work at all. It is a synaptic touchpad and I tried to install software (the generic Windows 7 software) but it still doesn't work in any way. Thanks for any help./
original title : Keyboard and Touchpad Not Working Correctly
The touchpad is an age-old feature, having long since replaced the “pointing stick” (or what I liked to call the “nipple”) as the standardized alternative to mouse control on a laptop. But if your touchpad stops working while you’re on the move, or in any other situation when you don’t have a spare mouse handy, you can end up stranded.
But don’t start training yourself to use Windows with only a keyboard just yet. Here’s our collection of tips on how to fix a malfunctioning touchpad (starting with the simplest).
Note: you’ll need an external mouse or touchscreen to go through with some of these tips. Also, the following fixes are for laptops running Windows OS.
1. Is the Trackpad Disabled in the BIOS?Keyboard And Touchpad Stopped Working![]()
There’s a chance that, for reasons unknown, your laptop touchpad is disabled in the motherboard BIOS of your laptop (this could happen after a firmware update, for example).
To check if this is the case, enter the BIOS by repeatedly pressing the Delete or F2 key as your PC is booting. (The button you need to press may vary).
Likewise, the BIOS for different motherboards has a different layout, but your goal is to find an option called “Internal Pointing Device” or similar, then make sure it’s set enabled. This may be under the “Advanced” heading if you have one. Once you’ve done this, select the option to “Save Changes and Exit.”
2. Re-Enable Your Touchpad Using the “Fn” KeyHp Laptop Keyboard And Touchpad Not Working On Ipad
This happened to me several years ago. Perhaps while trying to use a “Fn” key to change the volume on my laptop, I disabled my touchpad by pressing the wrong button. For weeks I didn’t know what the issue was, which wasn’t helped by the touchpad function icon on my keyboard looking just like a monitor icon, and it took me a while to realise that maybe it was in fact a touchpad icon.
Hp Laptop Keyboard And Touchpad Not Working Windows 8
While holding the “Fn” key, press every function button (the “F” keys) with a symbol on it that looks like it could be your touchpad to see if it switches back on. (Bear in mind, you might turn off your screen this way, so just press that button again if that happens.)
3. Remove Other Mouse Drivers
Have you plugged a whole bunch of mice into your laptop in the past and never removed their drivers? If so, there’s a chance that their drivers are interfering with your touchpad. (Some mouse drivers even disable your touchpad automatically!) Go to Device Manager, click the arrow next to “Mice and other pointing devices,” then right-click and uninstall mice one by one until your touchpad starts working again.
4. Update or Roll Back Touchpad Driver
While you’re in Device Manager, right-click your touchpad in the list (It may be called Dell TouchPad, Lenovo TouchPad, Synaptics, or similar, depending on the brand of your PC.), and make sure that it’s definitely enabled. If it is, click “Update driver” to see if there are any updates for it that might help.
Finally, a lot of people reported that their touchpads stopped working properly after getting Windows 10, which means that the W10 driver for your touchpad may be misbehaving. In Device Manager right-click your touchpad, then click “Properties” and “Roll Back Driver” to see if a previous version of the driver fixes the problem.
5. Enable Your Touchpad in “Mouse Properties”
In a lot of cases Device Manager doesn’t handle the enabling and disabling of your touchpad. If your touchpad somehow got disabled, then to switch it back on you’ll need to go to your Windows mouse properties to re-enable it.
Type
mouse into the Windows Search bar and go to Mouse Settings. Here, click “Additional mouse options,” then in the new window go to “Device Settings,” “Touchpad,” or whatever tab is at the far right of the window.
Find your touchpad in the list, select it, then click “Enable.”
6. Disable Tablet PC Input Service
If your Windows 10 laptop is a hybrid and has a touchscreen, then there’s a possibility that the Tablet PC Input Service, which controls stylus functionality, is interfering with your touchpad. If you don’t really use the stylus anyway, then it won’t be a big loss to disable it. If you do use it, however, you have to decide whether you want to go through the inconvenience of toggling this service on and off each time you want to use your touchpad.
To disable Tablet Input Service, hit Win + R, then type
services.msc in the box. In the list of services, scroll down until you find “TabletInputService” or “Tablet PC Input Service.” Right-click it, then disable it.
Conclusion
Hopefully all your touchpad-fixing solutions are right here, but if you can think of any more, then let us know. Remember that different laptops may have different software for their touchpad, so these instructions may vary slightly, but for the most part they should point you in the right direction.
